Effects of Smoking on Your Teeth

An estimated 1 billion people in the world smoke though many know the health risks that tobacco brings. Smoking cigarettes is not only one of the most harmful things you can do to your body, but tobacco products also have a very negative effect on your oral health.

Bad Breath
Not only does smoking give you dry mouth, but tar and nicotine settles in your oral cavity leading to a condition known as “smoker’s breath.”

Stained Teeth
Smoking causes major tooth discoloration. There are many tooth whitening products on the market but you could save more money not smoking at all.

Gum Disease
Gum tissue cells are effected by tobacco, which then separates the gum from the bone leaving them open and more apt for infection.

Tooth Decay
Smokers can develop a layer of tarter that without regular removal will lead to tooth decay and eventually tooth loss.

All these symptoms can easily be avoided. Don’t smoke. If you are a smoker and are trying to quit, take a trip to the dentist and have your oral health evaluated. Together you and your dentist can and decide on a plan to get you smoke free.
